TRIP AROUND TOWN: In Strand Street Frank Thornton, The Riverside Bar (formerly Pat Sullivan's) has extended his premises to incorporate a spacious "Steak House" overlooking the Dallow (with a long enough fishing rod he could well include fresh- fish dishes daily!!). In Banteer Road, just below Kanturk Hosiery Factory we have Kanturk Tool Hire, manager John Linehan- of Coolageela, a branch of Killarney Tool Hire operated by John and his brother in-law Kevin Herlihy. They offer a huge stock- many years of experience and an extensive repair service from lawnmowers which look good enough for rally- driving to the humblest garden equipment even if you only want "to hit the nail on the head" they have just the implement!! In Percival Street the proprietress of "Kanturk Kleaners", an enterprising Newmarket lady- Mrs. Hannah O' Keeffe has refurbished her premises and added a new dimension to her dry cleaning business (originally O'Brien's Drapery - next to Healy's). Her new addition comprises a varied stock of costume and sterling silver jewellery and quality stylish handknits in wool, silk and cotton by Donegal designer Edel Macbride. Further up the street Bob's Bar, (proprietor Dan Dennehy - son of the late Eily (P.D O' Connor and Bobs Dennehy, Lismealcunnin) is having an impressive face- lift and extension. You our more senior friends will remember this Bar as the well-known P.D's (O'Connor) Dan's grandfather). In Watergate Street the complex on the site of Dicko's Forge and garden at the rear is nearing completion and advertising retail outlets to let. "The Indian Cuisine", evidently is not going ahead there. The "Wheels of Fortune": Very good fortune for Kanturk Credit Union Cycling Club. Their "mentor-Guardian Angel", Danny Curtin, Coolageela tells me that they have won 4 out of 5 races in Dungarven and just as we are about to "go to press" he tells me a Junior member- Maurice O' Brien from Liscarroll won the All-Ireland (16 - 18yrs) 70 mile race. In Holland recently Maurice raced with the Irish team and was the first Irish cyclist over the line. The Golden Age: Lots of "Golden Moments" to celebrate! Congratulations to "Blacksmith" turned "goldsmith" - as Timmy Flynn, Bluepool and his wife Peggy (nee Lynch) celebrated recently their Golden Wedding Anniversary - also to another "Golden Couple" John and Dina Sheehan Duhallow Hosiery Company and to the Kenneally family, Central Stores, Watergate Street who on June 3rd celebrated the 50th anniversary of the foundation of their drapery business by their parents, Geraldine (nee Howard, Strand St,) and the late Andrew. The business is run now by Francis Kenneally and his wife Marie- daughter of Denis and Ann Riordan, Electrical Shop, Percival Street. To mark the event they had a big sale in all departments. Deaths: Please pray for the repose of the souls of the following friends. Paddy Burke, Murphy's Tce, Mill Rd., (late of C.I.E Staff, Banteer). Dan Coughlan, Rockchapel and New Jersey - brother of Joan Barrett (Billy's wife) O' Brien St. Jim Manley, Tailor and Draper, Strand St. Breda Kenneally, Greenane (nee Walsh, Castlepark) widow of Tom (Freemount Rd). Lizzie O' Donoughue, Upper Bluepool, widow of Ned (Lower Bluepool). Jerry Lawlor, St. Patrick's Place, (Dispensary House). Imelda Cronin, Dublin and Greenane (née O' Connell, Kilroe). Eileen Hickey, Mill Rd., wife of David retired from England (née Lehane Dromalour). Patrick Curtin, England - late of Upper Bluepool. Davie Jones - Curragh (late of Strand St.). Tony Loder, England (husband of Mary McAuliffe, Hospital Hill, daughter of Josie (née O'Sullivan) and the late Paddy). Bridie Lane, Newmarket (née Aherne, Lismire). May they Rest In Peace. From Cloyne to U.S.A: Fr. Tommy Lane, son of Tom and Peg, Greenfield moves from his curacy in Rathhcormac, Cloyne Diocese to the U.S.A. next month. Fr Tommy has been appointed Assistant Professor of Sacred Scripture in Mt. St. Mary's Seminary Emmitsburg, Maryland, U.S.A. This is the second largest Seminary in the U.S. The Friars for E.W.T.N., the Catholic T.V channel also do their priestly formation there. Fr. Tommy did a Doctorate in Biblical Theology in Rome before taking up parish work in Cloyne Diocese. "To Sleep - Perchance to Dream": Don’t know if William Shakespeare heard of "Ardrahan Lullaby Milk" which would undoubtedly improve the quality of his dreams if not his literacy skills! This is the latest addition to the famous "Ardrahan Cheese" produced by Mary Burns on her very progressive farm. This "morning milk" contains high levels of the sleep inducing substance MELATONIN which has been scientifically shown to produce and improve sleeping quality including Jet Lag - this is according to the Lancet Medical Journal 1995. The label says - "a regular mug of Lullaby Milk should help you to establish a good pattern of sleep" - one of the " to be taken less seriously" cures for insomnia is of course "sleep on the edge of the bed and you're sure TO DROP OFF"!! Sweet Dreams! DART : The very popular I.R.D Duhallow initiative DART - Duhallow Area Rural Transport is now providing transport to Mallow Hospital for daily appointments. A new route is now added to the existing services which run to Kanturk from surrounding villages to enable Senior Citizens to shop, visit a doctor, or socialise with friends in town - this new route is to Millstreet Country Park - from Rockchapel, Meelin, Newmarket, Kanturk and Banteer every Tuesday. The bus arrives at Millstreet Country Park at 12.30pm and visitors may have lunch there, enjoy a guided tour, Bingo and musical entertainment - This service certainly makes Duhallow an Independent State of Tír na n-Óg. MARRIAGES: We wish many happy years of marriage to Eric Brown, Greenfield (son of Michael, Percival Street and Ann née Donnellon, Church Street, and Ann Marie O'Connor, Kippagh. Carol McSweeney, Coongeel (daughter of Andy and Helen (née Hartnett) and Tadhg O'Connor, Dromina. Margaret O'Neill, Lismire, daughter of Jerh and Rita (née Ahern - Lismire) and Dan Sherlock, Cork. Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, Curragh, (daughter of Una and Derry (son of the late Dermot and Norrie née Breen) and Michael Sheehan, Bruruee. Denise McAuliffe, Strand Street (daughter of Dion - Principal B.N.S. and Patsy (nee Browne, daughter of Nellie (née Breen, O'Brien Street) and the late Michael) and Clive Hooper of Kent, England. Brenda O'Riordan, Mallow Road (daughter of Michael & Mary - Prop. Cosey Cinema) and David Conway, Mallow. Here are some words of wisdom - from some author called Sydney Smith - "MARRIAGE resembles a pair of shears so joined that they cannont be separated, often moving in opposite directions, yet always punishing anyone who comes between them" - and then, there was a gold-digger aging widow who erected a head stone to her late husband stating! "The light of my life went out" within months, she met an eligible multi- millionaire and added to the inscription on the stone " but I STRUCK ANOTHER MATCH"!!! Are You Game? Well, if so here are some interesting local reports. Cathal Cronin, Strand St, prominent G.A.A member tells me the U.12 hurling team- has won the Duhallow Final. The Junior Football Championship, first round between Kanturk and Knocknagree ended in a draw recently earlier win U.21 footballers. The weekly club draw is going well to provide extra facilities at the G.A.A grounds in Greenane and both Juniors and Juveniles too benefit from funds raised. Colaiste Treasa U.14 football Team won the Cork Co. Vocational Schools Final. Further afield Mike Maloney former Sally's Cross Bowling player was involved in two wins in two double scores played in New York. Kanturk Tennis Club is back in action for the new season classes and matches for tennis fans of all ages and abilities. Kanturk Soccer Club is going from success to success. They held their annual social in Duhallow Park Hotel in May and presented awards in each category. Clubman of the Year award went to long serving member of The Club Committee and present chairman Mick O' Driscoll (husband of Nora O' Brien, Kilroe) presented by Jeremiah Lehane, St. Theresa's Place, Life President. Best news of all, Kanturk Soccer Club and Kanturk Cycling Club will soon have their own "Home" as Cork Co. Council has finally approved the disposal of land at Gurteenard to both Clubs for a "consideration". This is a happy ending to a long "saga". At Kanturk Golf Club, "Golf Classics" are run to help a variety of local projects including the Stained Glass windows in The Church. Have you heard the Story of "THE DIRTY WINDOW"? - Well you COULDN'T SEE THROUGH IT- but incidentally looking through the Story of the Church's stained glass windows refurbishment, you CAN SEE that it is still seriously in debt! Other "Golf Classics" held were for The Chernobyl Children's Project and The Kanturk Sheltered Housing Project about which you heard in a previous newsletter. The ever - active Rugby Club has a novel Summer Venture. A Summer Rugby Festival TAG COMPETITION-, a fun sport enjoyed all around Ireland by male and female young and old players - panel of 10 - at least 1 over 40 player - at least 1 lady per team and no more than 4 current playing Club members - now is your chance to star - and ladies be "The Belle of The 'BALL' " if you're home on holidays - grand final in Rugby Club, Knocknacolon during August Bank Holiday Weekend followed by, as advertised a "MONSTER" B.B.Q (no monsters present, I'm sure - it probably refers to appetites of energetic participants!!!). Finally congratulations to Scoil Mhuire under 16 Football Team on their victory in the County Final over Mayfield Community School, Cork. Another Super Performance Congratulations once again to yet another Twohig's Supervalu outstanding performance in the National Supervalu Store of the Year Awards - 180 contestants nationwide - stores scoring under 85% eliminated - down to 5 Regional finalists - final judging done by external assessors - led by a lecturer in Retailing from a University in Scotland who visited all finalists spaced over 2 weeks - unannounced and spending about 3 hours in each store - Supervalu Kanturk has been in the final 2 years out of 3 and this year was awarded 2nd place in Ireland - very close to the winners in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Incidentally your newsletter is photocopied for you quarterly by courtesy of owner Michael Twohig and his Office Staff. Community Awards and The French Connection! This year's Community Council Awards were presented at the Annual Banquet, which is The Grand Finale of The Annual visit to Kanturk of our French "Twins" from Rostrenen, in Brittany. This year we celebrated the 15th anniversary of the twinning with over 40 French friends hosted by local families for the special week. Bill Cashin (Billy Boy) got a special award, as he has been Chairman of the twinning committee since its inception. The Hall of Fame award went to Neilus Jordon for his generosity in sharing his musical talents with the community for many years - Francis Kenneally, Central Stores was rewarded for his service to sporting and community bodies. The Mercy Sisters for their service to Education, this award was accepted by Sr. Philomena of Scoil Mhuire. Hugh Twomey of The Stand Bar in the Square (formerly Nell Cashins) (you heard of major refurbishment in a previous letter) got the award for the best shop front, and the remaining recipients you have heard about also in previous letters. Mrs. Vivienne Buckley, Millview, got a special award for her work as Head of the Irish Delegation for Team Ireland in the Special Olympics, while medal winners in the Equestrian section in The Special Olympics Gerard Healy and Kevin O' Connor also got special awards and finally Jack McCarthy (McCarthy's Butchers, Main St.) accepted an award on behalf of his son- Tim presently on a visit to Australia - who was runner up in The Young Irish Butcher of the Year Contest 2002 - and a member of Team Ireland Young Butchers representing Ireland in Zurich in 2003 - the team coming over all 4th in that contest. Good Psychology: Congratulations to Sinéad McNamara, Blarney - daughter of Robert, Strand Street and Noreen (Harrington, St. Theresa's Place), who graduated with a Masters Degree in Child Psychology from the University of Philadelphia. "Young Ones Reunion" Members of The Young Ones Show Band - founded from the Youth Club Brass and Reid Band and other young musicians came together for a reunion - recently and were joined by prominent members of bands from the by gone era, in The Edel Quinn Hall as a fund - raiser for the church stained - glass windows. The event was organised by Michael Foley of Duhallow Aluminum and U.P.V.C. (Bluepool), (husband of Agnes Walker). John, my husband officially known by the lads at the time as "THE ONLY UNPAID BAND MANAGER IN IRELAND" acted as their voluntary manager, mentor and chauffeur. - They had great fun together. On the big night backstage they held a "whip round" - and presented him with €6.9 saying, "now we're PAYING you at last!!! A great night was had by all the "young at heart" dancers of The Big Band Era, whose theme song could be "I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT". The members of The "Young Ones" participating were Brendan O' Connell, Kanturk, Connie Buckley - Liscarroll, P.J Piggott and John Hennessey Newmarket, Tommy Collins - Freemount, Timmy Lynch - Kanturk and unavoidably absent was Pat McMahon, Kanturk. We all "danced the buckles off our shoes" and the "Smoke Free Zone" was a great aid to our enjoyment - They didn't play "on top of old Smokey" - as big chimney said to small chimney "you're too young to smoke" - anyway nobody did!!! Retirements: We wish many happy years of leisure on their retirement to Stella Flavin, Girls' Primary School, V.P to Frank Crowley on his retirement from Public Life (he continues with his auctioneering business in Strand St.) - Incidentally Frank presented a €2000 cheque to Peg Fitzgerald (of Brosna), Matron of Kanturk Hospital - for Hospital Improvements - proceeds from his retirement function organised by friends, to John Mullane, Curragh (formerly Greenfield, husband of Mary (nee O' Toole, daughter of the late Catherine and Noel) on his retirement from The Staff of Irish Pride Bakery (formerly Keatings)", off the Bakers list officially - but, looking forward to keeping his garden in trim, any of these active - retired folk won't "let the grass grow under their feet", I assure you! Boys National School Fun Day: - held in The Town Park recently as a fund - raiser - great family day - as was a similar day organised by the Wilde Boar Festival Committee, also organised for children in The Town Park. During the festival there was street entertainment - games - and on the opening night a Breton - Irish concert with the Rostrenen group - an opportunity for 'The Rose of Tralee' to meet 'Danny Boy' or 'Ma Belle Marguerite', Under the Bridges of Paris' incidentally the "craziest" city in the world - where only the river is "SEINE". - Lively night enjoyed by all!!!. - Newsletter now available on www.duhallow.com That's all for now - a VERY BIG THANK YOU TO THOSE OF YOU WHO SENT DONATIONS FOR THE NEWSLETTER- without your help - our Spring issue - instead of being a "Red Letter Day" could have been a "Dead Letter Day".
